HEIR

CHAPTER 9

Nicki readjusted her short brown-haired wig in the bathroom. Callie matched her old color as close as possible to avoid questions from their boss and coworkers, tried to make the style cute and trendy. But as she sneered at her dim reflection sans makeup, she understood that this was truly who she was. It was the redheaded, professional looking woman who was the fraud.

At least they, she, looked nothing alike, saving her from being identified by anyone from the Ridge community who ventured into the restaurant. This was the whole purpose of the disguise in the first place.

A fist pounded on the bathroom door.

“You going to serve those tables, Nicki, or do you want me to just tell my customers to go across the street to Landros?”

Nicki rolled her eyes at Hinman’s blustering. Besides, she almost had enough to pay off the Bruins who happened to raise the interest rate again, adding another week’s paycheck on top of it. Once done, she planned go back to Cheri’s Diner. They paid worse, but at least the owners and customers treated her better.

“Be right there. Taking care of some feminine hygiene needs.”

She snickered, knowing that would shut him up. Men were so squeamish when it came to the female anatomy.

All men except Jake Bryant, of course. He seemed to expertly know every part…

Nicki squeezed her eyes shut, hating herself for thinking about him yet again.

It had been three days since that horrible incident at the Bryant household, and she still privately sobbed whenever she remembered her utter humiliation.

Even though nothing fully happened, no doubt Jake was lying to his drinking buddies this very minute about successfully nailing his father’s new assistant, then tossing her aside for the next woman to check off his ever-growing list.

Eva LeBlanc was probably spreading all sorts of stories to her friends as well, disgustingly expounding on them.

Everyone in Timber Ridge was probably laughing at her now, at the very idea that a poor, low-level assistant would foolishly believe someone of Jake’s rank would ever consider…

They were all cruel, entitled brats who had nothing better to do with their free time and no heart or compassion for anyone but themselves, and Nicki was thankful to be rid of the lot of them.

One more week. Then she planned to give Rob Bryant her notice, citing personal issues, no explanation needed.

Tomorrow was Monday. She would turn in her letter of resignation then, provide him with at least one week to replace her.

Maybe two. That would be the appropriate thing to do.

Yes, she could handle two more weeks. Particularly since Jake finally went along with her separation of work and pleasure policy, treating her now with deference and formality.

Nicki recalled the awkward next morning after the dinner fiasco. Jake walked up to her desk with a coldness in his tone that shot ice up her spine.

“Please check to see if Mr. Bryant can still meet with me, Ms. Gabrielle.”

She blinked hard, having dreaded this moment they would finally meet again.
